Coronavirus - Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives

Stay at Home

You should only leave your home for limited reasons. This includes:

⚫️ Work (If you cannot work from home)
⚫️ Shop for necessities
⚫️ Exercise
⚫️ Provide care
⚫️ Medical appointment

If you are at risk of, or experiencing domestic abuse, you can still leave home during lockdown. The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is staffed 24hrs 0808 2000 247.

You should follow this guidance immediately. The law will be updated to reflect these new rules.

Schools will move to remote learning for the most, remaining open for children of key workers and those pupils that are vulnerable. Exams won’t go ahead as planned but the Government is working with the regulator to put a new system in place and more details will be announced as soon as possible.

Clinically and extremely vulnerable people should begin shielding again.

Current Health Advice:

If you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started. The most common symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are recent onset of:

  • new continuous cough and/or
  • high temperature
  • Loss of taste/smell

If you live with others and you are the first in the household to have symptoms of coronavirus, then you must stay at home for 10 days, but all other household members who remain well must stay at home and not leave the house or allow anyone into your home for 14 days.

Furthermore, even if you are feeling well, you should avoid social interactions and mass gatherings, and work from home if you can. This is especially the case if you are over-70 or have a pre-existing medical condition that makes you more vulnerable to viruses. Read the full advice on protecting yourself if you're at high risk from coronavirus on GOV.UK.

Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.

You do not need to contact 111 to tell them you're staying at home.

Testing for coronavirus is not needed if you're staying at home.

FAQs:

What are the symptoms?

If you are infected you may have very minor symptoms, minor symptoms or more severe symptoms, but the NHS cites two symptoms to look out for as:

  • A new continuous cough
  • A fever or high temperature
  • A loss of taste/smell

Why has the UK taken a different strategy to other countries?

The Government's approach, based on the expertise of world-leading scientists, is to protect the most vulnerable and protect the NHS through contain, delay, research and mitigate. The Government will hold daily press conferences with the support of the Chief Scientific Adviser and the Chief Medical Officer, to keep the public informed about how we're tackling the spread of the virus, and what the public can do to protect themselves.

What is the Government doing to prevent panic buying?

Supermarkets are working together to reassure customers that there is no need to panic buy and to ask that they are considerate in the way they shop. The Government is speaking regularly to major retailers, but has confirmed it will take further measures if needed.

How will the Government support the over-70s if they're forced to isolate?

There have been lots of useful suggestions, such as encouraging shops and supermarkets to open for an hour for the over-70s. This is an excellent idea and I would encourage shops to offer this if they can.

It's important to note that older people won't be asked to stay indoors; they will still be able to go for walks/visit allotments/exercise pets etc. This is essential for mental and physical health.

I am a business that can offer support to the Government; who should I get in touch with?

The Government has created a Business Support helpline - you can contact them on 0300 456 3565.
